CCM Conerts Mark Brahms Anniversary

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music presents a Brahms Festival Oct. 4-Nov. 11. The event, held in honor of the composer’s 175th birthday (May 7, 2008), will include orchestral and chamber music concerts, and a conducting workshop with Gustav Meier, director of the conducting program at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore.
The celebration kicks off at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Corbett Auditorium with birthday cake and CCM’s Philharmonia Orchestra led by music director Mark Gibson. On the all-Brahms program are the “Academic Festival Overture,” Symphony No. 2 and Piano Concerto No. 2, featuring faculty artist Michael Chertock.

Oct. 11: Concert Orchestra. Hungarian Dances Nos. 1 and 6, Concerto for Violin and Cello in A Minor, Symphony No. 2. CCM student soloists. Annunziata Tomara, conductor.
Oct. 27-28: Conducting workshop. Gibson and Gustav Meier, conductors.
Oct. 31: Concert Orchestra and CCM choirs. Piano Concerto No. 1, “Schicksalslied,”"Neue Liebeslieder Walzer.” Eugene Pridonoff, pianist. Gibson and Brett Scott, conductors.
Nov. 1: Philharmonia Orchestra. “Tragic” Overture, Violin Concerto in D Major, Symphony No. 1. Anna Reider, violinist. Gibson.
Nov. 11: Waltzes and Hungarian Dances. Gibson, Donna Loewy and Albert Muhlbock, pianists.
All events are free and begin at 8 p.m. in Corbett Auditorium, except Nov. 11 which is in Robert J. Werner Recital Hall. Hours for the conducting workshop are 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-5 p.m. Oct. 27, and 12 p.m.-3 p.m. and 5 -8 p.m. Oct. 28.
