AKRON, Ohio, Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Summa Health System's Akron City Hospital has been named a "Leapfrog Top Hospital" for 2007. The only facility in Northeast Ohio and one of just 33 adult hospitals in the nation to make the list, Summa received this designation based on results from The Leapfrog Group's Hospital Quality and Safety Survey, a rating system that assesses hospital quality and safety.
According to The Leapfrog Group, a Washington, D.C.-based group aimed at improving the safety, quality and affordability of healthcare, the Hospital Quality and Safety Survey is the most complete and current assessment of hospital quality and safety available.
"We are honored to receive this recognition from Leapfrog in an area as important as quality and safety," said Tom Strauss, president and CEO of Summa Health System. "I am proud of Summa's patient-centered culture and this award is a tribute to our clinicians in all areas of the hospital who provide the highest level of care to our patients every day."
Leapfrog's Hospital Quality and Safety Survey collected data from hospitals on their progress toward implementing practices in four categories:
1. Computerized Physician Order Entry - physicians entering patient prescriptions and other orders into computers linked to error prevention software 2. ICU Physician Staffing - intensive care units staffed by trained ICU specialists 3. Evidence-Based Hospital Referral - how well hospitals perform select high-risk procedures 4. Leapfrog Safe Practices Score - how well hospitals progress on other National Quality Forum-endorsed Safe Practices
In order to be a Top Hospital, an organization must fully meet Leapfrog's standard for ICU Physician Staffing and the Safe Practices Score and either of the following: (1) two or more of the Evidence Based Hospital Referral areas; or, (2) Computerized Physician Order Entry plus one of the Evidence Based Hospital Referral areas.
"We are tremendously proud to provide our community with access to this high level of care," said Thomas G. Knoll, chair of the Summa Health System Board of Directors. "Summa represents the best in patient safety, clinical practice and infrastructure, and this award reflects that unwavering commitment to our patients and our community."
