MONTREAL - A new private referral service for health care is now available for Quebecers.
The service is run by Jacques Chaouilli, a Montreal doctor who went to the Supreme Court of Canada to overturn Quebec's ban on private health insurance. The Montreal-based Chaouilli Group directs patients to doctors in private or public practice where they can get faster service for a fee.
Patients have to pay an annual fee and referral fees as well as paying the doctors for service.
The group also offers health information and emergency transport.
The Quebec government is looking at the service but hasn't ruled on whether it's legal.
