Reading Eagle, Pa., Health Digest Column: Miller-Keystone Blood Center Schedules Its Collection Stops

Oct. 16–The Miller-Keystone Blood Center, 2745 Leiscz’s Bridge Road, Bern Township, has scheduled the following blood drive sites:

Wednesday: Fleetwood High School, 803 N Richmond St., Fleetwood, 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Belleman’s Church, 3540 Belleman’s Church Road, Centre Township, 3 to 8 p.m.

Thursday: Gov. Mifflin High School, 10 S. Waverly St., Shillington, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Hamburg High School, Windsor Street, Hamburg, 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Saturday: Ontelaunee Grange, 1076 Grange Road, Bern Township, 8 a.m. to noon; Gring’s Mill Recreation Area, 2083 Tulpehocken Road, Spring Township, 3:45 to 6:30 p.m.

Monday: Days Inn, 2299 Lancaster Pike, Cumru Township, 3 to 7 p.m.; Pioneer Grange, 46 E. Keller St., Topton, 4 to 8 p.m.

The MKBC has appointments available for the following hours: Mon-days 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 7 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 7 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 7 p.m.; Thursdays, 7:30 a.m. to noon; Fridays, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Saturdays, 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Appointments are required and may be made by calling the blood bank at 610-926-6060.

Reading Hospital will present the following classes and support groups:

Weight-Loss Surgery Seminar. Wednesday, 7 to 8 p.m., The Center at Spring Street, Boyertown.

Infant CPR Class, Thursday, 6:30 p.m., R-4 Classroom. Registration is required, $10 fee.

Joint Replacement Information Session, Friday, 1 p.m., N5 conference room. Learn about joint replacement from registered nurse Lynn Burkett.

Breast-feeding Education, Sunday, 2:30 to 4 p.m., Health Education Center. Registration is required; fee $10.

“Active Aging,” Monday at noon in Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex, Spring Township. Learn about “The Aging Eye” from Dr. Dominic Izzo. Seating is limited. Registration required, There is a $5 fee.

“Journey Through Pregnancy, Cesarean Birth Night,” Wednesday, Oct. 24, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Health Education Center. Registration required.

Childhood immunization clinics for uninsured or underinsured families will be conducted at Berks Visiting Nurse Association, 1170 Berkshire Blvd., Wyomissing, Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and next Tuesday from 1 to 5 p.m.

The Berks Visiting Nurse Association will sponsor at Grief Support Group meeting Thursday from 2 to 3 p.m. at Phoebe Berks Village & Health Care Center, One Reading Drive, Wernersville. For more information, call 610-927-8580.

The After Breast Cancer Support Group of the American Cancer Society will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Berks Unit, 498 Bellevue Ave., Muhlenberg Township. There will be a speaker on nutrition.

The group meets the third Thursday of each month. Call 888-227-5445 for more information.

A seminar for caregivers of those suffering from dementia will be presented Thursday, Oct. 25, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Chestnut Knoll Assisted Living and At Home Services, 120 W. Fifth St., Boyertown. Registration is requested by Monday by calling Chestnut Knoll at 610-473-8066.

The cost for the class is $15 for family caregivers, and a $35 donation for professional caregivers.

Registered nurse Sheryl Heim will speak next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Reading Hospital Education Room A on “Healthy Hearts for Women” as part of a free program presented by the Alumni Association of the Reading Hospital School of Nursing.
