Kindred Healthcare, Inc. (the "Company") (NYSE: KND) today announced that Lane M. Bowen, Executive Vice President and President of the Company's Health Services Division, was elected to the Board of Governors of the American Health Care Association ("AHCA").

The American Health Care Association represents nearly 11,000 facilities dedicated to continuous improvement in the delivery of professional and compassionate care to 1.5 million of our nation's frail, elderly and disabled citizens who live in nursing facilities, assisted living residences, sub-acute centers and homes for persons with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

"Lane has been a tireless advocate for our residents and employees and will be an asset to the AHCA board," said Paul J. Diaz, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company. "Since Lane's appointment as President of the Health Services Division in 2002, the division has improved its quality indicators and this year, 39 of our nursing centers received AHCA Quality Awards for demonstrating a strong commitment to quality improvement. Kindred earned the largest number of Quality Awards of any company in the country for the fourth straight year, a true testament to Lane's leadership."

"As an industry, we have the opportunity to work together to ensure that we continue to provide high quality resident-centered services," Mr. Bowen said. "As a member of the AHCA board, I look forward to being a representative for skilled nursing facilities, residents and employees across the country."
