Team Type 1 Running 3,000 Miles for Type 1 Diabetes Awareness: Team Type 1, a sports organization composed of athletes who have Type 1 diabetes, announced recently that it will begin a 3,000 mile run across America to promote diabetes awareness. The world-class athletes involved with Team Type 1 will begin their journey in Oceanside, CA on October 28, 2011 and hope to reach New York City on World Diabetes Day â” November 14 as reported by diabeticlive.com.
Team Type 1 is supported by SANOFI, a multinational pharmaceutical company. Team Type 1 boasts a membership of over 100 athletes who participate in a variety of events to promote awareness of diabetes as a growing problem in the United States as well as to encourage proper diabetes management and prevention through regular exercise. It will be the first time that an all-diabetic athletic team attempts a run across the nation.
The team is no stranger to tough competition. It has participated in the Race Across America, known as the world’s toughest bicycle race, every year since 2005 and has won the event four times since then.
Phil Southerland is CEO and founder of Team Type 1. “Since the inception of Team Type 1, our athletes with diabetes have been shattering the limits of what is possible,” said Southerland. “We’re so proud of our athletes for dreaming big and taking on the run of a lifetime in an effort to inspire others living with this disease. We are also promoting exercise as a measure to prevent Type 2 diabetes and better manage Type 1 diabetes. We can’t wait to watch them cross the finish in New York City. Our organization, fans and friends around the globe will be cheering them on.”
The 10-man roster includes athletes whose accomplishments span top finishes in the Ironman World Championships, the New York City Marathon, the Boston Marathon, multiple ultra-marathon events and an NCAA Final Four Soccer Champion.
“We are thrilled to have an unparalleled team of endurance athletes for our first ever run across the country,” says Tom Kingery, the team’s leader and four-time Ironman competitor. “These accomplished runners are not only amazing athletes but they are great people and role models in the diabetes community. They carry with them a powerful message of empowerment that instills hope and inspiration in those struggling to live a positive and healthy life with diabetes. We are very excited for this challenge and the opportunity to spread the message of hope from California to New York City.”
