Gary Gonzalez, a 28 year career firefighter returns to work – without restriction – thanks to the innovative Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) procedure. Dr. Eugene Lopez of Midwest Sports Medicine who helped mainstream BHR, a high performance alternative to total hip replacement. BHR simply resurfaces a small portion of bone, rather than replacing an entire hip, thus preserving bone and joint stability for younger, active patients like Gary. Dr. Lopez was trained for the procedure in the early stages of FDA approval and has been instrumental in helping many elite athletes and others get back in the game restriction-free.

Gary Gonzalez was having pain in his right hip due to degenerative arthritis. His pain gradually worsened and the doctors he had seen before Dr. Lopez told him that he was going to have to quit working as a firefighter. Gary remarked, âœTo be told that I could not go back to work ever wasnât acceptable to me.â He continued to work, but did so with increasing pain. Then he found Dr. Eugene Lopez of Midwest Sports Medicine. Gary recalled his first visit with Lopez, âœ[Dr. Lopez told me] â˜you do everything I tell you to do, and the surgery goes good, youâll be able to go back to work as a firemanâ… I was back to work in four or five months.â

The Birmingham Hip Resurfacing System relieves hip pain and improves hip function by replacing the parts of a patientâs hip that have been severely damaged by injury or degenerative joint diseases like arthritis, dysplasia or avascular necrosis. Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, commonly known as âœBHRâ, is intended for patients where total hip replacement may not be appropriate due to a higher level of physical activity. For this reason, accomplished hip resurfacing doctors like Dr. Eugene Lopez believe this to be ideal for most patients under age 60 who live non-sedentary lifestyles.

The BHR bone-conserving approach preserves more of the patient’s natural bone structures and stability, covering the joint’s surfaces with an all-metal implant that more closely resembles a tooth cap than a hip implant. This approach reduces the post-operative risks of dislocation and inaccurate leg length. Because the all-metal implant is made from tough, smooth cobalt chrome, it has the potential to last far longer than traditional hip implants.

The results of BHR are impressive and have some clear advantages:

-Less pain

-Quicker recovery

-Ideal for active people under 60

-95% of BHR implants still functioning for over 15 years

-Risk & complications are minimal compared to total hip replacements

-Lower revision rate and higher longevity

Over a year after the surgery, Gary said, âœI feel great. I feel now like I never had hips put in. Thatâs how good it is. And the range of motion is just the same.â Since a BHR patientâs hip anatomy is more natural, patients enjoy increased stability and range of movement.

Dr. Lopez explains why he has a high success rate with hip resurfacing, âœI was trained in England by Dr. Ronan Treacy – the Worldâs expert and inventor of BHR. Being trained first-hand by Dr. Treacy gives me the insight and knowledge needed to maximize results for patients.â

âœBirmingham Hip Resurfacing is a great procedure that I perform regularly at Alexian Brothers which is a top 50 nationally ranked hospital,â Dr. Lopez said. âœThis makes a big difference when youâre under 60 looking for help with a hip problem. You want to compare experience, training and the hospital when doing your homework for a surgery like this. You also want to talk to people that have had the BHR procedure. I have a long list of patients that are willing to talk about their successful results.â

Dr. Lopez is supported by a handpicked, specialized staff that has helped him perform over 100 successful Birmingham Hip Resurfacing implants. Many of his BHR patients have been elite level athletes – including a Tour De France cyclist, UFC Fighter and a professional bull-rider – return to competition.

Dr. Lopez believes that interacting and encouraging his patients is a key component to successful Birmingham Hip Resurfacing as well as the other orthopedic surgeries he and his team perform. âœWe interact with our patients and provide them with unmatched service that goes above and beyond performing a surgery. We work to help patients make the best decision for their orthopedic health.â

Birmingham Hip Resurfacing is an attractive option to support an active lifestyle. BHR has long-term successful outcomes around the globe:

-2009 Australian Registryâs results showed BHR Hipâs success rate at 8 years (95%) is better than all other hip resurfacing implantsâ success rates after their 5th year. (1)

-2008 Australian Registryâs study found that hip resurfacing devices outperformed total hip replacement for men under age 55, as well as ages 55-64. (2)

-Great Britainâs Owestry Outcomes Centreâs patient registry revealed BHR Hipâs 10-year success rate of 95.4%, with 98.6% of patients rating their opinion of the experience as âœpleasedâ or âœextremely pleased.â (3)

-A study presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 2010 Annual Meeting discussed importance of several factors in successful outcomes of hip resurfacing replacements. One factor was prosthesis selection, and it showed that BHR had a significantly lower risk of revision than other hip resurfacing options. (4)
