New Orleans, La. (PRWEB) March 08, 2012

The Loyola University New Orleans School of Nursing was recently awarded a national scholarship by the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence, which will pay tuition for a deserving new student to attend the Doctor of Nursing Practice program starting this year.

The Jonas Nurse Leaders Scholar Program was created to partner with nursing schools in an effort to support the Institute of Medicine´s “Future of Nursing” goal designed to double the number of doctorally-prepared nurses. There are only 250 Jonas Scholars in the United States and Loyola is the only nursing school in Louisiana to successfully compete for this national scholarship.

“It is quite an honor to have Loyola receive such a prestigious national scholarship for a new D.N.P. student,” said Ann H. Cary, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.N., professor and director of the School of Nursing. “Our goals and those of the Jonas Center are perfectly aligned, as we both understand the serious need for more doctorally-prepared nurse practitioners in an ever-changing health care field. This scholarship puts another qualified nurse back in the classroom and on the way to a D.N.P. degree.”

The scholarship is the most recent national honor bestowed on Loyola´s School of Nursing.

The 2012 edition of the U.S. News & World Report Top Online Education Programs rankings guide singled out the Loyola University New Orleans School of Nursing as one of the best online graduate programs in the country. Loyola was one of only five nursing schools in the country and the only Jesuit institution to receive the honor roll designation from U.S. News & World Report.
