World’s Largest Embolization Meeting, GEST 2012 U.S., Features Latest Therapies
NEW YORK, March 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Embolization for benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) – the latest endovascular therapy to challenge standard-of-care surgery – will be among the many cutting edge topics highlighted at the upcoming Global Embolization Symposium and Technologies 2012 U.S. (GEST) meeting. Top experts in the field will discuss techniques and findings regarding using embolization to treat BPH, a condition that affects about half of men 60 and older.
The world’s largest embolization meeting and a leading source of education on endovascular intervention and vascular malformation, GEST 2012 U.S. will be held May 3-6 in New York City. The meeting will feature oral and poster presentations – more than 100 in total – based on an international call for abstract submissions, as well as talks and demonstrations by leading experts and original research hailing from around the world.
Prostate artery embolization (PAE) – which some say could become as popular a procedure for men as uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is for women – will be discussed and debated in sessions featuring lead PAE researchers Francisco Carnevale, M.D., Ph.D. and Alberto Antunes, M.D., of the University of Sao Paolo, Brazil, and Joao Pisco, M.D., of St. Louis Hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, among others.
Commonly practiced UFE – as well as ovarian artery embolization – will be featured as well, with discussions on anatomy, technique, suggested embolics, failures and complications. One of the pioneers of UFE, James Spies, M.D., Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, D.C., will lead a session titled “UFE: Urban Myth,” focusing on certain technical aspects of UFE that have come to be accepted without any proof.
GEST also will offer several Master Class options to discuss the variety of materials used in embolization, including gelfoam, glass or resin particles, plugs and coils. Experts will offer tips, techniques and insights regarding how to choose the right embolic material for each treatment situation. Among the Master Class panel moderators will be Jafar Golzarian, M.D., of the University of Minnesota, Ziv Haskal, M.D., of the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore and Mark Sapoval, M.D., Ph.D., of the Hopital Europeen Georges Pompidou Universite Paris Descartes, Paris, who also are the GEST 2012 course directors.
Additional sessions will focus on embolotherapy and other endovascular treatments for:
- Pelvic congestion syndrome
- Cancer, including hepatocellular, pancreatic and liver, breast, kidney and lung
- Arteriovenous malformation
- Acute and chronic gastrointestinal bleeding
Experts will discuss other aspects of endovascular therapy, including how to best use imaging guidance for treatment and gauging response, the latest on drug-eluting particles as well as regular features Five Tips in Five Minutes and The Daily Wrap Up, where attendees are encouraged to ask questions.
GEST U.S. 2012 will feature original interventional oncology clinical and basic research and expertise from across the globe, including Japan, Argentina, Canada, Italy and the United States, as well as virtual reality training, spirited debates and live action cases. Physician attendees will earn continuing medical education (CME) credit.
