March 21, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 21, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — Over the past year patients throughout the United States have been interviewed about their experience receiving radiation therapy for treatment of prostate cancer at urology-integrated prostate cancer centers. Overwhelmingly patients cited better coordination of care, superior levels of service and positive treatment outcomes as unqualified support for this particular health care model. Urologist ownership of radiation therapy centers has become a hot topic in Washington. AKSM/Oncology produced these videos as a way to share unfettered perspectives from the patients who are actually being treated at the centers. AKSM/Oncology develops prostate cancer-specific radiation therapy centers in conjunction with local urologists in individual markets. To date, thirteen urology-integrated prostate cancer treatment centers offering state-of-the-art technology have been developed in multiple states.

“In light of today’s climate we felt it was extremely important to address this issue head on and for people to see how urology-integrated prostate cancer treatment centers provide maximum benefit for those who need it most – the patients,” said AKSM National Medical Director Daniel S. Murtagh, MD. “Some of the most important advances in urology and patient care have been made possible by physicians using their own resources to bring new technologies to their communities. Patients benefit from these integrated care models that allow for physicians to work together more efficiently when addressing health outcomes, treatment options and utilization issues.”

In addition to the patient videos AKSM commissioned a study that identified how physician ownership has to date and will continue to be a necessary and strategic health care approach as the U.S. population continues to age. The study cites in part: “Physician investment has led to early and widespread patient access to the best treatments and to better integration of technology and patient care. This has resulted in high quality care and, importantly, significant cost containment. It is anticipated that the need for increased technological capacity to serve urology patients will increase in the future, and urologist ownership will be important to meeting this need.”

Nearly 50 patient videos and copies of the study can be found at www.aksm.com

AKSM/Oncology, Inc. is a subsidiary of AKSM, Ltd. a national provider of technology and services by urologist for urologists since 1986.
