HackensackUMC is First in New Jersey and New York Metropolitan Area to Perform Groundbreaking Robotic Surgery
HACKENSACK, N.J., March 21, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — HackensackUMC is the first hospital in New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area to perform a robotic-assisted cholecystectomy, gallbladder removal surgery, using a single incision through the belly button. This groundbreaking surgery combines medical expertise, advanced technology, and state-of-the-art hospital and surgical facilities. Over a million gallbladders are removed annually in the United States and 10,000 in the State of New Jersey. This innovative surgery will allow thousands of Americans to have their gallbladder removed through a minimally invasive surgical procedure, maximizing patient care and minimizing pain and recovery.
The surgery was performed by Stephen Pereira, M.D. with the assistance of Celine Richardson, M.D., at HackensackUMC on Tuesday, March 20. The gallbladder removal was performed with the aid of a new FDA-approved da Vinci Si HD(TM) Surgical System. The robotic surgery allows the gallbladder to be removed through a single incision, rather than multiple incisions. There are clear advantages with doing the entire operation through one incision. The belly button is a natural port of entry, offering virtually scarless results.
The single site platform offers an effective, minimally invasive alternative to both open surgery and laparoscopy, making it much easier to perform single incision surgeries. The robot provides greater precision and improved 3D high-definition imagery, offering the surgeon a much better view of the patient’s anatomy. With the robot, the surgeon controls all the movement through their hand motions, but the robot scales down the motion, minimizes tremors allowing for greater precision. Single-incision surgery enhances the overall treatment of the patient with a multitude of benefits – minimal pain, quick recovery, and faster return to regular everyday activities.

Leading in Robotic Surgery
