Evergreen Hospital Earns Five-Year Baby-Friendly Hospital Designation
KIRKLAND, Wash., March 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Evergreen Healthcare today announced it has renewed its five-year designation as a Baby-Friendly Hospital, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to adopting new policies and procedures that lead to improved health outcomes for newborns and families.
The designation is awarded by Baby-Friendly, USA, an accrediting body that implements the United Nation’s Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organization (WHO) Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for infant feeding.
To be considered for the Baby-Friendly designation, Evergreen demonstrated successful integration of Baby-Friendly’s “Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding” into the hospital’s nutritional education and support of mothers and newborns.
“Providing the highest level of quality care for new families is one of the most rewarding aspects of our job,” said Evergreen Healthcare CEO Bob Malte. “This renewed designation recognizes the exemplary work of the Family Maternity Center and underscores its leadership reputation in maternity care both in our local community and nationally. We’re so proud of the new families that begin their journey at Evergreen, along with our team’s work to support them throughout life’s milestones.”
Over the years, scientific studies have shown that breastfeeding can have significant health benefits for both the newborn and the mother, including a reduced risk of certain acute and chronic diseases. For more information on breastfeeding, go to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services website.
In addition to this latest designation, Evergreen has also attained a Five-Star rating from HealthGrades for maternity care for eight consecutive years. According to the HealthGrades 2011 Obstetrics & Gynecology in American Hospitals report, women who give birth at Five-Star rated hospitals experience 32 percent fewer complications.
Along with its outstanding clinical outcomes in maternity care, Evergreen also achieved a Five-Star rating for gynecologic surgery. HealthGrades’ report found that women who undergo gynecologic surgery at Five-Star rated hospitals experience 35 percent fewer complications, as well.
The Evergreen Family Maternity Center provides superior maternity care throughout the phases of pregnancy, childbirth and post-partum care with comprehensive education, support and clinical care.
