Nebraska’s Stop-Sale System Achieves Significant Quarterly Results In Battle Against Meth

April 17, 2012

LUTHERVILLE, Md., April 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) – a nonprofit organization that facilitates cooperation between law enforcement, healthcare professionals, state regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical manufacturers in the prevention and investigation of drug diversion – today lauded the latest quarterly results achieved by the real-time, stop-sale system in Nebraska. Quarterly data released for 2012 by the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) shows electronic technology in the Cornhusker State blocked the sale of more than 3,800 boxes of medicines containing pseudoephedrine (PSE) preventing more than 8,900 grams from potentially being diverted by meth criminals.

“NPLEx is just three months old in Nebraska and already the real-time, stop-sale system is yielding significant results,” said Charles F. Cichon, executive director of the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI). “NPLEx provides a balanced approach to meth prevention in Nebraska. The technology allows retailers to stop illegal purchases of reliable and safe medications containing pseudoephedrine right at the point of sale and provides police officers with valuable data in real time. This targeted approach protects law-abiding Nebraskans’ access to cold and allergy medicines. Since the system is brand new to Nebraska, it’s important that elected officials recognize its success and give it sufficient time to continue to work.”
