Effective October 1998, the European Commission’s Directive on Data Protection prohibited the transfer of personal data to non-EU nations who did not meet the European standard for privacy protection. The Safe Harbor program bridges these different privacy approaches, providing a streamlined process for U.S. organizations to comply with the European Commission’s Directive.
