Rehabmart.com, an online e-commerce company that sells rehabilitation and medical supplies, has joined into a distribution partnership with The Wedge Group, LLC, to offer their ingenious drinking device for those who suffer with dysphagia and swallowing disorders to a larger consumer market base. The Wedge Group, headquartered in Des Allemands, Louisiana, has patented this revolutionary invention as the Wedge Cup®. This extraordinary cup is the ideal solution for any patient with injuries or swallowing disorders that tend to make drinking from regular cups difficult, or, because of the risk of aspiration, even dangerous. This includes patients with decreased strength, limited muscle control, those recovering from arm or neck injuries or those with limited range of arm, or upper body range of motion. Specifically designed to easily dispense thickened liquids, the Wedge Cup® also works well with any liquids.

Bryan Bergeron invented the Wedge Cup® as a labor of love for his brother, Roy, who because of contracting spinal meningitis at the age of five months old, was left severely handicapped, mentally and physically. After the death of their parents, Bryan became solely responsible for Roy’s welfare and he attended numerous meetings with his therapists and caregivers through the years, including a swallow study meeting about eleven years ago. Roy had been having trouble drinking liquids, and Bryan was told that finding a cup that worked well for him had not been an easy task thus far. The therapists recommended that his cup always be filled above the halfway point to eliminate the necessity of having to tilt his head back to get ‘every drop’. Because of Roy’s dysphagia, tilting the head back when drinking liquids could potentially cause aspiration of tiny amounts to enter his lungs, which could lead to pneumonia. When Bryan suggested that they get him a cup with a wedge inside of it, the speech-language pathologist informed him that there were none available on the market, and he should go home and make one…which is exactly what he did.

He approached Tulane University’s Biochemical Engineering Department with his wedge cup prototype to perform a peer study. Graduate student, Alyssa Alta performed a comparative test with seven other containers, including several commonly used for dysphagia and swallowing disorders. This tilt/flow study found that Bryan’s wedge cup completely emptied at a small series of tilt angles comparatively to the other cups, and also found that its average volume per angle was greater than all of the other dysphagia cups on the market. It additionally finished dispensing all of its contents sooner than all of the other cups tested, as well. Bryan also received input from therapists while attending a speech and language conference for the Veteran’s Association in Tucson, Arizona that they would like some type of locking device to keep patients from moving the adjustable flow control. From that suggestion, he created a lock under the lid which is now a standard feature of the Wedge Cup®.

“We are thrilled to introduce the Wedge Cup® designed by The Wedge Group to more consumers,” said Hulet Smith, Founder and CEO of Rehabmart. “This innovative drinking aid features a fully adjustable flow control that regulates the continuous output of liquids–from normal flow to greatly reduced delivery–allowing the patient to comfortably, safely and easily drink at their own pace. The Wedge Cup® is the perfect solution for any patient with swallowing disorders such as dysphagia, or anyone who has trouble holding a cup, such as those with arthritis, or recovering from stroke. This cup can be used in healthcare and therapy facilities, long-term care, rehabilitation centers and, of course, by individual patients in their own private homes.”
