Detroit, Michigan (PRWEB) June 21, 2012

On June 23, 2012, the Matthew Bittker Foundation will present the Children´s Hospital of Michigan Foundation (CHM Foundation) with a check for $50,000 to advance the research and treatment for children diagnosed and/or treated with neuroblastoma at the DMC Children´s Hospital of Michigan.

The donation is from the proceeds raised from the Shop4aCure program, a fundraiser held in the fall of 2011 in which the Matthew Bittker Foundation partnered with the CHM Foundation to raise funds to fight for Pediatric Cancer. This donation will allow over $100,000 to be allocated to neuroblastoma research, thanks to a generous match of over $50,000 from Garden Fresh Salsa of Ferndale, Michigan.

This funding will help support a new treatment for neuroblastoma, called antibody immunotherapy, which may improve survival of high-risk neuroblastoma patients for the first time in almost 30 years. Neuroblastoma is the most common non-brain solid cancer in children. Unfortunately, currently more than 50% of children with neuroblastoma have what is termed, “high risk” disease: an aggressive, disseminated and extremely difficult to treat tumor. This new research will be able to approach treatment of this devastating disease from a new angle- tailoring a program initially used with success to treat breast cancer patients. The DMC Children´s Hospital of Michigan exclusively is conducting this research in order to improve the future treatment plans for patients.

About Shop4aCure: it is a booklet that is sold for $50 in which shoppers receive a 20% discount at participating Shop4aCure businesses for ten days. Select Somerset Collection merchants and numerous other local retailers from around Metro-Detroit have joined Shop4aCure to help raise much needed funds for research. Books will be sold once again this fall.
