New Polar RCX3 Heart Rate Monitor Versus Suunto Quest
The Heart Rate Watch Company blog compares the brand new Polar RCX3 with the Suunto Quest heart rate monitor. Both are mid-price range heart rate monitors for cycling and running but the Polar RCX3 adds the kicker of GPS.

The Heart Rate Watch Company blog recently reviewed the new Polar RCX3 heart rate monitor in comparison to the Suunto Quest. Both devices are good for avid runners and cyclists that want to have speed, distance, heart rate, calorie and other data.

Both watches use foot pod technology for running. The Suunto foot pod is small enough to fit in the insole cavity of some running shoes made by companies like Adidas and Nike while the Polar foot pod must be attached to the shoe laces. “Frankly, we prefer the smaller foot pods but they all must be calibrated at the track to be accurate and, even then, they must be used on terrain where average stride length does not vary that much” says Squire. He adds, “This makes them ideal for road racers and short to medium distances but for mountains or for runners that run/walk alternate the GPS is a far better solution”.
We give a slight edge for runners to the Suunto Quest, but for mountain runners go with the Polar RCX3 GPS.
Both the Polar RCX3 and the Suunto Quest work with bike speed and cadence sensors making them ideal for cyclists who want speed, distance, heart rate and other data. The RCX3 does hold the advantage of working with the Polar G5 GPS unit so it can obtain post-ride mapping data. For this reason we would give the edge to the Polar RCX3 for cycling because map data is helpful.
The key with all bike watches is to get a handlebar mount so your data is front and center. Wearing a watch for cycling on your wrist makes no sense because the risks of riding with one hand are just too great.
Running is about the only sport in the world that measures speed in minutes per mile, or kilometer, every other sport uses miles, or kilometers, per hour. For this reason, the Polar RCX3 GPS is definitely superior for sports outside of cycling and running because it gets the speed for any sport as long as you are outside.
