Feldenkrais® Lesson CDs Address Myriad Health Problems Caused by Poor Posture
Re-discovering the natural movements of the body with Feldenkrais lessons may alleviate a range of chronic health problems from back pain to high blood pressure.

The Feldenkrais Store, now has two Feldenkrais CD collections to support and encourage healthy posture. They are: Creating Effortless Posture, by Erin Ferguson, and Posture with a Purpose, by Bridget Quebodeaux.
Al Wadleigh, the owner of The Feldenkrais® Store and a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner®, states that he is pleased to offer these products because they address a myriad of health problems. Poor posture, he explains, may lead to discomfort and pain and may place unnecessary stress on the muscular/skeletal system. “Feldenkrais lessons alleviate this problem by addressing the individual´s underlying postural habits and changing the way his brain and nervous system organize his movements within an ever-changing environment.”
In these days when so many factors, from slumping over computers and carrying backpacks, to car accidents and sports injuries, may alter our posture, a course of lessons which help the individual rediscover a wider and more natural range of movement may be particularly beneficial. This is especially true when one takes a closer at the slew of health problems caused by poor posture:
- Chronic headaches from tightened muscles in the neck and upper back
- Back pain from favoring some muscles at the expense of others
- Diminished range of motion from disproportionate use of selected joints and muscles
- Diminished breathing from a rounded back which cramps the lungs and reduces air capacity
- Fatigue from taxing muscles forced to support the body in an inefficient way
- High blood pressure from a strained and awkwardly positioned neck (see Ian Edwards, et al., The Journal of Neuroscience 27 (31) 2007: 8324-8333)
Erin Ferguson, a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner(cm) who teaches in Boulder, Colorado, states that it is often the “unconscious habits – whether you adopted them recovering from an injury, dealing with a chronic condition or [just from] living out your choices in life – that create ongoing physical, emotional or psychological pain.” In her CD set, Creating Effortless Posture, she takes the student through four gentle lessons which encourage the student to sense how small movements can impact the whole skeletal structure.
As the student progresses through the lessons, he learns to release tension and acquire a new freedom of movement natural to his body. “In effortless posture,” Ferguson states, “you are neither fighting with gravity nor are you collapsing into it.” Rather, you are learning to “distribute the work equally throughout your system so that there is no extra tension in any part.”
In Posture with a Purpose, Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner(cm), Bridget Quebodeaux, uses movement as a “learning tool” to reveal a “person´s possible responses to being in the world.” She structures her lessons as a “series of gently repetitive movements” to help the student “develop a picture of what is normal” to him.
“Improved posture,” she states, is not about “exercising or holding your body in the right position.” It´s about discovering “ways of moving and being that are natural and feel good.” Quebodeaux´s material is presented in 3 CDs, containing four lectures and four Awareness Through Movement Lessons.
