Factsheet: Harper Government Renews Funding for Health Information

OTTAWA, June 27, 2012 /CNW/ – The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of
Health, today announced Harper Government funding to allow the Canadian
Institute for Health Information (CIHI) to continue its work of
providing reliable data about the health care system.

“The Harper Government is committed to protecting the health and safety
of Canadians,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “This investment will fund
research that provides accurate information about the state of
healthcare in Canada and the overall health of Canadians.”

Performance measurement and reporting are used in leading health systems
around the world to drive change and innovation. Through organizations
like CIHI, Canada has a strong foundation on which to build the
development of comparable measures and performance reporting.

“Our Government has announced its intention to provide record levels of
long-term, stable funding for Canada’s health system,” said Minister
Aglukkaq. “While we respect provincial and territorial jurisdiction, we
can show leadership at the federal level by funding an organization
like CIHI, to make sure we’re measuring results in the same way across
the country.  Sharing the results with Canadians helps increase
transparency and accountability in healthcare.”

“Whether you’re a minister of health, a CEO of a hospital or a manager
in the health system, you need good data to make sound clinical,
resource and administrative decisions,” said Dr. Brian Postl, Chair of
the CIHI Board of Directors. “We are grateful for this funding which
recognizes CIHI’s unique role in the health system. It will allow us to
continue our work of connecting comparable health data from across the
country to support decisions that lead to improved health care and
healthier Canadians.”

CIHI is an independent, not-for-profit corporation that provides
essential information on Canada’s health system and the health of
Canadians. Funded by federal, provincial and territorial governments,
CIHI provides unbiased, credible and comparable information to enable
health leaders to make better-informed decisions.
