Extreme adventure athlete John Yarington recently completed a 2 week test of the new Suunto Ambit GPS watch in Columbia South America for the Heart Rate Watch Company blog. The watch displayed amazing navigation capabilities and was uncanny at locating underwater dive locations.

John Yarington recently returned from an adventure running, diving and navigating expedition for the Heart Rate Watch Company blog on the Isle de Providencia, Columbia.

During this two week test John put the Suunto Ambit to the test in hot, humid conditions, salt water, volcanic scree fields, and did some serious navigation testing finding offshore reefs with incredible precision. “When John returned one thing that stuck in my mind was how he said his dive master really wanted the Ambit for navigation” says Rusty Squire, President of the Heart Rate Watch Company. He adds, “They found dozens of underwater reefs with pinpoint precision which is impressive because it saves on navigation time”.

John is an ultra-endurance runner, back country skier and all around adventurer; he has even climbed and skied the Grand Teton. “John is headed into the 12,000 foot Beartooth mountains for the 4th of July week to further put this watch through the paces and we are excited because we can’t think of a better tester on the planet than John – the guy is an animal”, says Squire.

For those that would like to read the complete account of John’s Colombian adventure just visit blog.heartratewatchcompany.com. Questions and comments can be left on the post and we’ll make sure that John answers them personally.

“John took a tumble in the volcanic scree down in Columbia and thought that he broke his Suunto Ambit for sure but was delighted to see just a small scratch on the crystal” says Squire. He adds, “In the future we are going to make some screen savers for the Ambit from iPhone screen savers to further prevent this problem”.

John and his wife Dee are planning a big adventure week in the Beartooth’s with Dee testing the new Polar RCX3 GPS. Dee will also be taking a 250 mile backpacking trip in the high Sierra’s of California later this summer, so we’ll keep posting the Yarington adventure stories as they come available. This winter they will also be taking extensive back country ski trips while testing various products, so stay tuned.
