Renowned Cardiologist Seth J. Baum MD Opens the First B. Braun LDL-Apheresis Center in Florida

July 9, 2012

BOCA RATON, Fla., July 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Seth J. Baum, MD, FACC, FAHA, FACPM, FNLA, a Boca Raton Preventive Cardiologist, cholesterol expert, and fellow of the National Lipid Association has just opened the first and only B. Braun LDL-Apheresis Center in the state of Florida. The bi-weekly LDL- Apheresis procedure can gently cleanse a patient’s blood of excess cholesterol. Studies have shown that in appropriate patients the risk of heart attack and stroke can be reduced by as much as 75%.

The LDL-Apheresis Center primarily treats those afflicted with Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH), a devastating genetic disorder occurring in one individual per 500 that can result in dangerously high cholesterol levels.

“We’re responding to the unmet need in therapeutic options in Florida,” according to Dr. Baum, “LDL-Apheresis is a gentle, two hour procedure which can have a life saving impact on those afflicted with FH.”

In specific populations such as French Canadians, Dutch Afrikaans, and South African Ashkenazi Jews the number of afflicted individuals can reach one in 100. Thus, in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale/Palm Beach region more than 20,000 people could potentially suffer from this disease. Unfortunately this cholesterol abnormality often goes unnoticed.

The consequences of non-detection or inadequate treatment can be lethal, as people with this disorder typically have heart attacks and strokes in their forties and fifties. Frequently, pharmaceutical therapy is inadequate in FH patients.

In the late 90′s Dr. Baum changed his practice from Interventions (stents) and Electrophysiology to Cardiovascular Prevention. He is a pioneer in this field, lecturing internationally to physicians and writing extensively on the subject. Dr. Baum is also the Secretary of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology and the Treasurer of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids. He has authored numerous articles in scientific peer-reviewed journals and two books on cardiovascular disease and prevention. In July, 2011 he initiated the Women’s Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Program at the Christine E. Lynne Health and Wellness Institute, Boca Raton Regional Hospital. He is on faculty at FAU and University of Miami Medical Schools. He practices in Boca Raton FL.

Dr. Baum is available for consultations by appointment at 561-488-5535 7900 Glades Road, Suite 400, Boca Raton, FL 33434
