Life-like App from Nucleus Medical Media Gives Heart Patients Reason to Diet, Exercise

July 12, 2012

Free app simulates the silent progression of coronary artery disease

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) July 12, 2012

A new app for the iPad, iHeart Touch, may be a doctor´s new best friend when it comes to persuading millions of Americans to lose weight and exercise. The app uses a life-like beating heart that takes patients inside an artery, showing the effects of years of plaque buildup in coronary artery disease, ultimately leading to a heart attack. The deceptively entertaining app gives patients a glimpse into a possibly grim future, but with a purpose: to start conversations with their doctors about taking better care of themselves.

Created by Nucleus Medical Media, iHeart Touch also includes animations of diseases and treatments, such as coronary angiography, coronary angioplasty (PCI), and coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), some of which go into graphic detail. “The over-arching mission of Nucleus is to raise health literacy,” said Ron Collins, co-founder and CEO of the company, “and we believe patients will take positive action when they are able to see the full scope of what lies in store for them.”

New Jersey physician Jeff Taylor, a cardiologist at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, called the app a “great concept”, stating: “I believe the animations are much easier for patients to understand than still images printed on fliers, or even the pre-constructed printouts from an EMR we are required to give out as part of meaningful use criteria.”

iHeart Touch is the first of a line of free mobile apps Nucleus Medical Media plans to release for clinicians and patients in the U.S. beginning in 2012. “Our goal is to pay for app development through corporate sponsorships so clinicians may use them freely with patients,” said Collins. “Nucleus is working with sponsoring partners who wish to reach an audience of patients and clinicians, and who share our vision of improving global health literacy.”

The iHeart Touch app is available online at the Apple App Store and free to download through iTunes at: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iheart-touch/id534675711?mt=8
