The medical industry is at arms with the salt manufactures in the United States as new reports from both sides questioning the medical benefits of salt intake. However, recent studies as well as a compelling article posted at Health and Wellness portal BeWellBuzz.com are showing that certain types of salts, known as medicinal salts are better than others for multiple health related conditions in the human body.

The great salt debate has lingered for years about whether or not salt is good for the human body. The facts state that human body contains many salts, of which sodium chloride (AKA common table salt) makes up around 0.4 per cent of the body’s weight at a concentration pretty well equivalent to that in seawater. Since the human body loses salt whenever people sweat, it has to be continually replaced by salt. However, according to statements made by several medical experts, a significant reduction in salt intake could save hundreds of thousands of lives each year.

“The heart benefits of reduced salt intake are on par with the benefits of population-wide reductions in tobacco use, obesity, and cholesterol levels,” says Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, PhD. “Cutting U.S. salt intake by just half a teaspoon a day would prevent up to 92,000 deaths, 99,000 heart attacks, and 66,000 strokes. In the United Kingdom, a population-wide reduction in dietary salt of 10% was achieved in four years without a reduction in sales of the food products included in the initial effort and without consumer complaints about taste.”

However, what is not disclosed in the statements provided by Dr. Bibbins-Domingo are the benefits of certain types of salts, known as Medicinal salts which as their name implies offers several additional medical benefits as opposed to regular table salt. The regular salt used by most Americans is devoid of essential minerals. Medicinal salts, on the other hand, contain essential minerals such as magnesium, zinc, sulfate, potassium, and others. These minerals, in turn, give medicinal salts their healing properties. Although the composition of different medicinal salts varies, nearly all of them offer certain health benefits.

Studies, such as ones performed by Dr. I. Machtey show that taking a bath in warm water containing Dead Sea Salt can provide relief from psoriasis and other common skin conditions such as acne, skin allergies, eczema, dermatitis, and seborrhea. As a matter of fact, both the National Psoriasis Foundation and the International Psoriasis Community recommend Dead Sea Salt as a useful alternative treatment for psoriasis.

Himalayan Crystal Salt contains all 84 elements present in the human body. Procured from remote Himalayan regions, this salt can be used in food or as a bath salt. Double-blind studies conducted by the University of Graz in Austria showed improvement in respiratory conditions, organ functions, and connective tissues. Participants also reported sleeping better and having more energy. The study noted a boost in the ability to achieve higher concentration levels. Some of the study participants stated they lost unwanted weight while others involved in the study showed enhanced hair and nail growth.

It is suggested that people who have heart disease, high blood pressure, a kidney disorder, or a liver disease should consult their healthcare provider before using bath salts or increasing their salt intake.
