The Maddak Awards Competition for Product Design was initiated by Kurt Landsberger, Chairman of the Board of Maddak, to honor and support the creativity and dedication of occupational therapy practitioners and students who continually look for new ways to enhance the rehabilitation of their clients. According to Landsberger “The program provides a forum for practitioners and students to share their ideas and innovations while being recognized for their contributions to advancing patient care and independent living.”

The winners of the 2012 Maddak Awards were announced by Mary Seto, Executive Vice President of Maddak Inc., during the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Conference at a complimentary breakfast sponsored by Maddak, and open to all conference attendees. According to Seto, “Competition was fierce this year with more than 30 submissions so the judges really had their work cut out for them”.

David Blaski, OTR/L, Medical Devices, LLC was awarded first place in the Professional category for his innovative bilateral lower extremity aquatic orthotic device, the Aquatic Stabilizer Apparatus. The Aquatic Stabilizer Apparatus is an aquatic therapy device designed specifically for children with cerebral palsy. Blaski told us “The device ensures variable abduction during extension and flexion while swimming, and minimizes adduction allowing for proper kicking movements used in swimming. This translates into increased lower extremity strength that the patient may be able to transfer into other forms of mobility. And, it is ℠family member friendly´ which allows families to continue therapy treatment at home and gives the child the freedom to engage in swimming activities with friends and family.”

First place in the Student category was awarded to Robert Pippinger, a graduate student at the University of Central Arkansas. Pippinger earned the award for his innovative pediatric therapy device, the Rockin´ Scooter. The Rockin´ Scooter is a 2-in-1 device that offers a functional multipurpose scooter board and an equally effective vestibular board. Pippinger explained “The scooter is designed to increase endurance, strength, postural control/stability and motor planning while promoting quality prone extension.”

The 38th Maddak Awards Competition took place in April during the AOTA Conference in Indianapolis. Entries were judged by a volunteer panel of judges, all occupational therapy practitioners, and rated on originality, therapeutic value, function and appearance/presentation. Cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place were awarded in both professional and student categories. New to the program this year was the addition of a People´s Choice Award which allowed conference attendees to voice their choice for favorite innovative device. Winner of the People´s Choice received a gift basket worth over $250.
