Paula Deen, celebrity cook and Emmy award winner lost as much as 30 pounds only by changing her outlook on food and redoing the way her plate looks. Having spent her entire cooking career praising Southern dishes laden with butter and sugar, as well as deep fried foods, she paid the price for her eating habits when she was diagnosed three years ago with Type 2 diabetes. Over the last six months, she got dead serious about her health and though it took her a couple of years to get to the point, she noticed that making a few small changes could add up to big results. Paula Deen accredits her weight loss to pushing the fryer aside, hitting the weights, watching her portion sizes, and limiting the amount of carbs she eats.
The 65 year old substituted fried chicken and mashed potatoes with Greek salads and baked fish to lose the weight. She still misses her old treats, but she enjoys them in moderation. Paula is doubling up on salad or vegetables and putting smaller portions of carbs and she tries to walk 30 minutes a day. Instead of skipping breakfast altogether, she enjoys a fruit smoothie and for dinner, instead of fried chicken or worse, baked chicken or fish and Greek salad instead of chips are on the table at the Deen household.
After she went public with her diabetes in January, Deen launched a new campaign called ‘Diabetes in a New Light,’ a partnership with Novo Nordisk. She reportedly takes the company’s drug Victoza to help her maintain proper blood-sugar levels. The transition from Chocolate Gooey Butter Cookies to sugar-free ice cream for dessert instead is only due to a different thought process. She told people the key to her weight-loss success has been dropping white foods like potatoes from her diet, so long Southern mashed potatoes, and swapping out others, like using mustard instead of ketchup. Having from a size 18 to a size 10, Paula Deen appeared on MasterChef as a guest judge looking a lot fitter and trimmer and there was noticeably less of the southern chef than ever before.
