Worthington, OH (PRWEB) August 03, 2012
Step By Step Academy, a highly regarded nonprofit autism treatment center in Columbus, Ohio, today announced the addition of its Adult Day Program to its continuum of care. The new adult day program, now available for registration, is designed to serve individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, specializing in the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The program serves individuals 18 years old or older, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. 4 p.m. year round at Step By Step´s 30-acre campus at 2440 Dawnlight Ave., Columbus, OH.
Program participants engage in activities that increase their proficiency in daily living skills, such as personal care, cooking, cleaning and planning for personal wants and needs. In addition, participants will learn about employment and are taught how to seek work, and they receive job coaching.
“Through our adult day program, Step By Step Academy continues to fulfill its mission of assisting individuals with disabilities to achieve skills needed to excel in life,” said Michele LaMarche, executive director of Step By Step. “The adult day program provides a valuable service to adults who have transitioned out of the education system with the needed skills to build happy and productive lives in the community.”
Step By Step´s adult day program is managed by Cynthia Ring, MSW, LSW, Director of Adult Services, and is part of the organization´s Step 2 Success initiative, which is designed to empower adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. All areas of service are under the guidance of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and licensed social workers.
Through the Step By Step adult day program, participating individuals are provided with opportunities to socialize, develop hobbies, recreational interests and friends, said LaMarche. The ultimate goal of the program is to have individuals transfer employment skills to the community workforce.
“The program offers participants a safe and reinforcing environment to practice skills, learn and try new things, have fun and build their repertoire of independent living activities,” said LaMarche. “And it aims to increase participant´s independence and autonomy by giving them the ability to make choices about what they want to learn and do, learn new skills to take care of themselves, decrease their dependence on family and professionals, and participate in social activities to increase friendship building skills and leisure skills.”
Program participants must have enough behavior regulation to not need one-on-one staffing, and must have an intellectual or developmental disability, need to be able to benefit from the service in some way and want the service.
Step By Step provides treatment for children, teens and adults with ASD throughout the greater Columbus, Ohio, metro area. For more information about the program or Step By Step, visit http://www.stepbystepacademy.org or call 614-436-7837.
