Study Results of Artificial Disc Recipients Show Significant Improvement Compared to Pre-Surgery Condition
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., Sept. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — According to Charles S. Theofilos, MD, founder of The Spine Center, in Palm Beach Gardens, a recent study of four-year data on patients who had the artificial disc replacement in the cervical spine have shown significant improvement in returning to a normal lifestyle as well as elimination of pain levels experienced prior to surgery.
Outcomes of the patients in the study, who were followed for two years, show that more than 90% said they would have the same surgery again. Data from the study has also shown that the patients who underwent artificial disc replacement maintained a significant range of motion across their surgical level when compared to patients undergoing fusions. Patients showed a reduction in overall rates of necessary secondary surgery either in the replaced disc site or above or below the site, as is common in fusion surgery. Patients who receive fusion surgery usually experience a four-fold increase in re-operative rates.
The study: “Results at 24 months from the prospective, randomized, multicenter Investigational Device Exemption trial of ProDisc-C versus anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion with 4-year follow-up and continued access patients” (SAS Journal 2010), Rick Delmarter, MD, Daniel Murrey, MD, Michael Janssen, DO, Jeffrey Goldstein, MD, Jack Zigler, MD, Bobby K-B Tay, MD, Bruce Darden II, MD.
