2012 Human Research Protection Award Recipients Announced
BETHESDA, Md., Dec. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — Awards for Excellence in Human Research Protection for 2012 were announced today by Dr. Peter G. Goldschmidt, President and Founder of the Health Improvement Institute.
Winner of the Annual Award for Best Practice was Hospital Corporation of America (Nashville, TN) for its best practice, IRB “Cheat Sheet” Placemats. Created by David Vulcano (HCA’s Responsible Executive for Clinical Research), these 11×17 laminated placemats have various criteria for key IRB decisions printed on them. They were generated exclusively to enhance IRB discussions and compliance with criteria-based decisions germane to human research protection.
Recipients of an Award of Excellence for Best Practice included:
- Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth System, and University Hospitals Case Medical Center IRB Consortium (Cleveland, OH), Collaborative Review Structure. The Structure intends to increase the efficiency of the IRB review process for investigators who may want to conduct a research study at multiple sites across the region and responsibly manage IRB work. This review process also maximizes the principle of beneficence by allowing research studies to be reviewed in a streamlined fashion, making potentially beneficial therapies available more expeditiously.
- Washington University in St. Louis – Human Research Protection Office (St. Louis, MO), Staff With Answers Today! (SWAT!). The SWAT! service is designed 1) to provide timely responses to questions and compliance issues, 2) to develop consistency in staff response, 3) to provide transparency during the IRB application process, and 4) to lead to the reduction of timelines for the IRB application and approval process.
“The Award program offers positive recognition for excellence in the field of human research protection,” said Dr. Goldschmidt. “This year’s awards continue the high standard that we have seen since the program began. We congratulate the winners.” Awards are given for demonstrated excellence in promoting the well being of people who participate in research. The Health Improvement Institute created this Award program. This year’s judges were drawn from academic, compliance, consulting, health services, legal, and research review organizations.
