Soy has high phytoestrogen content. Naturally it has been undergoing multiple studies by the food and supplement industries to develop alternatives to conventional HRT. Soy phytoestrogens are believed by some to act as surrogate estrogen. The Hospital for Special Surgery states, “Phytoestrogens, found most concentrated in soy foods, have been linked to lower incidences of certain cancers, heart health, relieving menopausal symptoms, and potentially lowering the risk of osteoporosis.”

Despite positive studies, one should not expect soy to cure or completely eliminate menopause symptoms or to treat other serious disease. The article by Hospital for Special Surgery goes on to say, “The dietary approach appeals to many women because it is a natural alternative to hormones. Unfortunately, we still have a limited understanding of the physiological effects of soy phytoestrogens. To receive benefits similar to those from use of hormonal drugs, one must consume a near-vegetarian diet that is rich in foods not typical to American cuisine. Physicians and scientists caution women that the evidence thus far suggests that food-based estrogens may not provide all the known benefits of estrogen drugs, especially the ability of the drugs to protect bones against osteoporosis and their apparent ability to preserve brain function and ward off Alzheimer´s disease.”
