Barilla Center For Food And Nutrition (BCFN) To Speak At United Nations Meeting On Food Security And Nutrition
BANNOCKBURN, Ill., Feb. 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — The Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition (BCFN) is pleased to announce that its Advisory Board Member, Ellen Gustafson, will be a discussant at the 67th Session of the United Nations General Assembly’s Special Meeting on Food Security and Nutrition on February 14, 2013.
Gustafson will speak to the United Nation’s objective of identifying and addressing the underlying causes of food insecurity and building the momentum to take action. Food security is of particular concern given the increasing world population, rising food demand and the adverse impact of climate change on agricultural production.
“Representing the private sector, I am proud to be working with the Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition on our joint commitment to enhancing food security and reducing the environmental impact,” said Gustafson. “Through its research on climate change, food prices and food waste – and thanks to the public debates it organizes to discuss these topics – the BCFN is helping to identify the causes and raise awareness on food insecurity, a crucial step to solve the problem.”
Established in 2009, the BCFN is a think tank dedicated to exploring global issues related to food and nutrition from a multi-disciplinary perspective. The activities of the BCFN are guided by an Advisory Board composed of experts from diverse but complementary sectors – from climate change to medicine. The BCFN has investigated a broad range of topics through published articles, indices and white papers, educational webinars, and public forums.
“We are honored Ellen Gustafson will be joining the private sector panel to provide insights on behalf of Barilla on what the food industry can do to address global hunger,” said Guido Barilla, President of the BCFN and Chairman of the Barilla Group. “As a pioneer in social entrepreneurship, Ellen most recently contributed a written interview about improving access to nutritious foods in the BCFN’s book published with the Worldwatch Institute called Eating Planet 2012.”
