Narconon Louisiana celebrates the 47th Anniversary of the Narconon Program, sharing its humble beginnings with Narconon Louisiana students.

Denham Springs, LA (PRWEB) February 22, 2013

On Tuesday, February 19, 2013, Narconon Louisiana Director of Life Skills Services, announced the celebration of the 47th anniversary of Narconon Drug Treatment Centers which began in 1966. He imparted to the students of Narconon Louisiana how the program began and encouraged each of them to seize this opportunity to change their lives as did program founder William Benitez while an inmate in Arizona State Prison.

By the time he was 31 years old, William Benitez had “carried the monkey” (heroin) for 18 years and spent 13 calendar years behind bars in Arizona State Prison. It was there that one of the guards told him, “The best thing to do with guys like you is take you behind a building and do you and everyone else a favor and put you out of your misery.” Mr. Benitez became determined to overcome his addiction.

A book found in the prison library, “Fundamentals of Thought” by L Ron Hubbard, would alter the course of Mr. Benitez´s life, turning him away from drug abuse and towards survival. Mr. Benitez later recalled, “What impressed me was that Hubbard´s work concentrated not only on identifying abilities, but also on methods (practical exercises) by which to develop them. I realized that drug addiction was nothing more than a ℠disability,´ resulting when a person ceases to use abilities essential to constructive survival.”

He also discovered that “if a person rehabilitated and applied certain abilities, that person could persevere toward goals set, confront life, isolate problems and resolve them, communicate with life, be responsible and set ethical standards, and function within the band of certainty.” These realizations planted the seeds which would form the backbone of the rehabilitation program the world knows as Narconon.

After several attempts, beginning in 1965, Benitez delivered the first Narconon program in 1966 to 20 inmates of the Arizona State Prison. Those 20 inmates remained drug free for the rest of their lives. The combination of two factors — one man´s indefatigable intention to change his life for the better and a philosopher´s intention to help all men to help themselves, evolved into one of the world´s most successful drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs.

Narconon Louisiana Executives, staff and graduates celebrated and honor the 47th Anniversary of the Narconon program.
