South Bay Vein Specialist, Family, Colleagues Continue Outreach Efforts in Kenya
South Bay Vascular Center and Vein Institute´s Dr. Polly Kokinos is currently volunteering her time and surgical skills to the needy people of Kenya. Dr. Kokinos has been in Kenya since September, serving as a surgeon through the American College of Surgeon´s “Operation Give Back” program, which matches doctors with volunteer opportunities around the world.

While Dr. Kokinos treats the people of Kenya, her husband, Michael, has also been volunteering his unique skills to help make a difference in children´s lives. A contractor by trade, Michael went to work to build a new dormitory for 30 orphaned girls at the Kitoben Children´s Orphanage. The Kitoben orphanage houses around 85 children who range in age from 3 to 16. Many of the children there lost their parents to AIDS. They have endured many hardships already in their young lives. In fact, none of the children had ever before seen a swing or a teeter-totter. So, Michael built a playground for the orphanage as well the new living quarters.
The charitable spirit spurred by Polly and Michael Kokinos has also traveled back to the South Bay Vascular Center and Vein Institute. Beata, a member of the front office personnel team, saw a way that she too could help the people of Kenya.
Beata organized a fundraiser and recruited her friends and other staff at South Bay to contribute. Together, they raised $500, enough to buy a cow and calf to supply milk for the children at the orphanage. This will provide vital protein to the children´s diets, which are otherwise composed only of the Kenyan staples of cornmeal mush, kale, rice, and beans.
Thanks to everyone who participated in this effort to improve the lives of needy children. We look forward to hearing more from Dr. Kokinos as she and her family continue to help the people of Kenya.
