Earicles Surgically Reconstructs Ears

April 9, 2013

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Dr. Sheryl Lewin, a Craniofacial Plastic Surgeon who specializes in reconstructing ears, is pleased to announce the formation of Earicles (Miracles for Ears), a non-profit organization whose mission is to serve children born without ears through research, education and need-based surgical care.

Dr. Lewin has dedicated her career to ear reconstruction, specializing in Microtia, a congenital condition in which the ear does not develop properly. She performs a newer type of surgery to create the ear using a Medpor implant. Her artistic approach and innovative surgical techniques have helped minimize scarring and create more natural appearing ears.

The word Microtia translates to “small ear.” Microtia occurs in many different variations, ranging from just a small ear to complete absence of the ear. This condition is usually associated with hearing loss.

Earicles will host its 1(st) Annual Los Angeles Microtia Atresia Conference at the beautiful Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, California on August 9 – 11( )of 2013. The conference will host families of children born without ear(s) from across the globe. It will provide much needed medical education and awareness of Microtia and Atresia by nationally recognized physician experts. At conference activities, families will meet children who have had successful surgery for these conditions.

Earicles is also pleased to announce the first patient who will receive free surgical treatment for Microtia. Santiago is an 8 year old boy from Ecuador who was born with no ears and no ear canals. Despite being deaf without hearing aid assistance, Santiago is an excellent student who functions remarkably well. His family dreamt of helping him get ears, but were unable to afford the expense of traveling to the United States for surgery. With the help of Earicles, Santiago will now come to the U.S. twice, for each ear reconstructive surgery. K and B Surgical Center is providing the operating room facilities free of charge for this child.
