LOMA LINDA, CA (PRWEB) April 15, 2013
Blue Shield of California has named Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) a Blue Distinction Center for Spine Surgery® and a Blue Distinction Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement®.
Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® program is a national designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality specialty care — which expanded recently to include more robust quality measures focused on improved patient health and safety.
Loma Linda University Medical Center is proud to have met the rigorous selection criteria set by the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care program. “We pride ourselves on providing the highest level of care to our patients,” said Lyndon Edwards, administrator of LLUMC East Campus, “and this recognition is a testament to that. Being recognized as a Blue Distinction Center is a tribute to the dedicated team who has played a role in the development of LLUMC´s comprehensive programs in spine surgery and knee and hip replacements. Their clinical expertise has resulted in better, overall results for our patients.”
Medical Providers and employers have relied on the Blue Distinction program to identify hospitals delivering quality care in numerous specialties since 2006. The selection criteria used to evaluate facilities was developed with input from the medical community and includes general quality and safety metrics. LLUMC has successfully met the rigorous selection criteria as set by the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care Program.
“Blue Distinction Centers set themselves apart by adhering to best practices in patient safety and surgical care and producing consistently strong outcomes with fewer complications,” says Marcus Thygeson, M.D., senior vice president and chief health officer for health care services at Blue Shield. “Blue Shield of California is pleased to recognize the high-quality care that Loma Linda University Medical Center and its physicians deliver.”
Research confirms that the newly designated Blue Distinction Centers demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and readmissions than their peers. The program provides consumers with tools to help them make better-informed healthcare decisions. These results will also enable employers, working with their local Blue Plan, to tailor benefits to meet their individual quality objectives.
Blue Distinction Centers+ not only meet the same quality criteria as Blue Distinction Centers, but they also go a step further. Hospitals receiving a Blue Distinction Center+ designation are also measured on how efficiently they deliver this high-quality patient care by being 20 percent more cost-efficient.
LLUMC offers comprehensive spine surgery services, as well as knee and hip replacement options that are available at LLUMC-East Campus. For more information about these specific services, please call 1-877-LLUMC-4U.

Blue Distinction® Centers+ (BDC+) also met cost measures that address consumers´ need for affordable healthcare. Individual outcomes may vary. National criteria is displayed on http://www.bcbs.com.
