New Infographic Shows Surprising Senior Safety Risks and Tips for Staying Safe
Infographic from Bay Alarm Medical is designed to raise awareness of the unique accident risks faced by seniors.
PACHECO, Calif., May 1, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — Bay Alarm Medical, a nationwide provider of medical alerts, has released a new infographic highlighting senior safety risks and tips. Featuring the company’s popular Grumpy Grandpa mascot, the infographic identifies some of the most serious risks that today’s seniors face, and includes some surprises.
“When people think of senior health, they usually think of the diseases and conditions that seniors may struggle with,” says Alan Wu, marketing manager for Bay Alarm Medical. “But staying healthy also means staying safe.
Wu says that seniors are at a significantly higher risk of accidents than the general population.
“For a senior, an accident such as a fall can be as debilitating as a heart attack or a stroke,” says Wu. “We hope this infographic helps spread awareness of that.”
Citing data from government and industry sources, the infographic focuses on three risk areas: medications, slips and falls, and fires.
“The one that really surprises people is the risk of fire,” says Wu. “For seniors over the age of 65, the fatality rate from fires is twice the national average. When you get to age 75, the fatality rate is three times the national average.”
Wu says there are many reasons why seniors face a greater risk of dying in a fire, including a reduced sense of smell that makes it harder to detect smoke, and decreased mobility that could it harder to escape when a fire occurs.
Besides the risk of fire, the infographic points out that 26% of seniors make potentially serious mistakes taking their medications, and 32% of seniors experience one or more falls each year.
For each of these risk areas, the infographic presents three steps that can be taken to reduce risks.
The full “Senior Safety Tips” infographic is available on the Bay Alarm Medical blog at http://www.bayalarmmedical.com/medical-alert-blog/infographic-senior-safety-risks-and-tips/. Wu says the company encourages people to share the infographic with family members.
“We want to get the word out,” he says, “We hope people will share this infographic on Facebook and help raise awareness.”
