Michigan mental health professionals at the Birmingham Maple Clinic recently reported on a study by the Partnership at Drugfree.org, which found that prescription drug abuse among teens has risen 33% since 2008. Lori Edelson, Birmingham Maple Clinic therapist said, “The latest study on drug abuse by teens confirmed some of the most alarming trends in prescription medication abuse, including the use of drugs like Adderall or Ritalin in teens who haven´t been properly diagnosed with ADHD and the frightening practice of stealing pills from the family´s own medicine cabinet in order to sell them or abuse them.” The study found that one in four teens reported misusing or abusing a prescription medication at least once in their lifetime.
This latest study on the complicated mental health issue of drug abuse in teens, found that many parents have lax attitudes and even incorrect beliefs when it comes to ADHD medications. Edelson said, “There are more and more cases of parents giving their teens ADHD medications even though they have not been diagnosed with the mental health disorder, simply because they believe the child´s grades will improve, but that isn´t how these medications work.” Drugfree.org´s results found that nearly one-third of parents believe that drugs like Adderall or Ritalin will improve their teen´s academic performance, even if they do not have ADHD.
