MDA Hosts Annual Charlotte Muscle Team Event
Top athletes, local heroes and business leaders come together for fundraiser.
CHARLOTTE, N.C., (PRWEB) May 17, 2013
Charlotte´s top professional athletes and local heroes are set to share the spotlight with children served by the Muscular Dystrophy Association at the annual Charlotte Muscle Team® event on Tuesday, May 21 at Bank of America Stadium from 6-10 p.m.
Charlotte Muscle Team is a unique social event that pairs top professional athletes and local heroes, including military personnel and fire fighters, with an “MDA Buddy” (a local child living with a neuromuscular disease) for the evening to help raise awareness and funds for families served by MDA in the Charlotte area.
MDA National Goodwill Ambassador and self-proclaimed sports fanatic Bryson Foster, 12, of Concord, N.C., is excited to be paired with Carolina Panthers offensive tackle Jordan Gross. The duo will team up for the evening to help spread the word about MDA´s lifesaving mission to sponsors, families and other local celebrities in attendance.
“Athletes and service members are considered heroes for what they do professionally. But to me, they are even bigger heroes for supporting MDA and the fight against muscle disease,” Foster said. “That’s why Charlotte Muscle Team is one of my favorite events of the year, because I get to spend the evening getting to know some of the heroes who make a difference every day for families like mine.”
WWE wrestling legend and longtime friend of MDA Sgt. Slaughter will be among some of the pro athletes attending this year’s event. Also, the Association is proud to welcome JD Motorsports NASCAR driver Mike Wallace and Maj. Gen. Chuck Swannack (retired U.S. Army) to the Muscle Team.
The Charlotte Muscle Team event will be held in the exclusive Panthers Den at Bank of America Stadium, home of the NFL´s Carolina Panthers. Participants can meet and greet athletes, coaches, MDA Buddies, local celebrities and business executives while raising money to support the Association. This year, MDA will present Kenneth Beuley, CFO and director of development at the Keith Corporation, with the 2013 Joe Martin Champion of Spirit Award. This annual honor recognizes outstanding individuals in the Charlotte community who make a difference in spreading awareness of neuromuscular diseases and help further MDA´s mission to find treatments and cures.
Charlotte Muscle Team 2013 coaches include: Ronald G. Sherrill, chairman and CEO of SteelFab Inc., and William A. Fox III, vice president – project director of CB&I. This year’s honorary coach is CB&I President Clarence L. Ray Jr.
This year’s event also is made possible by title sponsor CITGO Petroleum Corp., with help from Muscle Team Exclusive Dinner Underwriter sponsor Wells Fargo and Hall of Fame Sponsors, including CB&I, Mercedes-Benz of South Charlotte, SteelFab, Nucor and Piedmont Natural Gas. Funds raised at the event directly benefit local families served by MDA in the Charlotte area, and the Association’s programs of research and health care services, including a weeklong summer camp at Camp Bethelwoods in York, S.C.
MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to finding treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases today affecting more than 1 million Americans. It does so by funding research, providing comprehensive health care and support services, and through advocacy and education.
In addition to funding more than 250 research projects worldwide, MDA maintains a national network of 200 medical clinics; facilitates support groups for families affected by neuromuscular diseases; and provides local summer camp opportunities for thousands of youngsters with progressive muscle diseases.
