Clearview Treatment Programs Clinical Director to Present on DBT and Substance Abuse at WCSAD
Dr. Alina Gorgorian will discuss how Dialectical Behavior Therapy helps those struggling with both Borderline Personality Disorder and addictions on June 1, 2013.
Venice Beach, Calif. (PRWEB) May 21, 2013
Not all treatments are effective when it comes to treating a dual diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and addiction. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is one therapy that is proving to be successful for the treatment of both BPD and substance abuse.
On Saturday, June 1, Alina Gorgorian, Ph.D., clinical director of Clearview Women´s Center for Borderline Personality Disorder treatment in Los Angeles, will provide attendees of the West Coast Symposium on Addictive Disorders (WCSAD), an overview of how DBT works, to help patients who are struggling with both BPD and substance abuse.
“Substance abuse frequently co-occurs with Borderline Personality Disorder and may cause heightened symptoms in either disorder,” said Dr. Gorgorian. “The co-occurrence of the two disorders can cause severe emotional dysregulation, increase the probability of relapse and poor treatment outcomes, and increase the risk of suicide.”
Dialectical Behavior Therapy can give people struggling with both BPD and a drug or alcohol addiction the tools needed to better regulate their emotions and improve impulse control.
During her lecture, which will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the La Quinta Resort and Club in Southern California, Dr. Gorgorian will help attendees to:
- Increase their familiarity with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) protocols
- Understand how DBT has been adapted to help clients struggling with substance abuse
- Learn about case conceptualization from a DBT perspective
The West Coast Symposium on Addictive Disorders, held May 30 to June 2, 2013, in La Quinta, Calif., is an annual event that provides education and networking opportunities for addiction treatment professionals.
