Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 28, 2013

Sovereign Health would like to announce that it has partnered with the West Coast Symposium on Addictive Disorders (WCSAD) to present an Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) Training. At this year´s upcoming West Coast Symposium, Sovereign Health will be presenting a two-day long training entitled: “Department of Transportation: Substance Abuse Professional (DOT/SAP)”.

The WCSAD is a catalyst for forging new bonds, creating new referral networks and generating significant return on investments for exhibitors and supporters. At WCSAD, expect to reach Employee Assistance Professionals, Social Workers, Psychologists, Professional Counselors, Chemical Dependency Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Rehabilitation Counselors & Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors and more. Last year, WCSAD hosted more than 705 participants from 7 countries and 45 states. This year the conference will take place at the La Quinta Resort & Club from May 30th to June 2nd.

At the symposium, Sovereign Health will be presenting a two-day training on the requirements of a Substance Abuse Professional, led by Mr. Steven S. Garnham. The SAP training is designed to address the needs of those wishing to become Substance Abuse Professionals with the Department of Transportation.

SAPs are the individuals who evaluate employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and make recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare. SAPs represent the major decision point (and in some cases the only decision point) an employer may have in choosing whether or not to place an employee behind the steering wheel of a school bus, in the cockpit of a plane, or at the emergency control valves of a natural gas pipeline.

To become an SAP an applicant must have received 12 hours of qualifying training and then pass a qualifying examination. In addition, those qualified as SAP’s must complete 12 hours of continuing education relevant to the SAP function, including recent updates in the regulations. This training is designed to meet those necessary hours.

Mr. Garnham is uniquely qualified to provide this SAP training. He is the current Northeast Region EAP for Amtrak currently serving in this position for over the past 5 years. Steven has worked in the field of behavioral health for almost the past 30 years in positions such as certified addictions counselor, substance abuse professional, certified trauma responder, and Employee Assistance Professional as a sworn officer with the Philadelphia Police Department.

Steven has also been a SAP for many years. Sovereign Health is proud to present this SAP training, along with the WCSAD at this year´s symposium. Not only does this event promise to be informative and engaging, its fits nicely within one of the most important missions that Sovereign Health has, enhancing the expertise and knowledge in the field of addiction treatment.

The SAP Training will take place on May 31st and June 1st from 8:30am to 5:30pm. For more information on the West Coast Symposium and the SAP Training follow this link: http://www.wcsad.com/
