At this year´s i2i Systems´ User and Thought Leadership Conference, “Solutions for Your New Data Reality,” President & CEO, Janice Nicholson´s compelling keynote presentation offered insights, optimism and solutions for healthcare organizations to endure in today´s data-abundant, super-connected electronic world.
Nicholson was clear in her understanding of the struggles organizations have faced since the adoption of the Electronic Health Record (EHR), saying “in speaking with clients over the past 12 months, I have learned that so many medical professionals feel as they are swimming in a sea of data.” As Nicholson pointed out, the complexity of clinical data and the lack of standards for data capture have created major challenges for providers trying to turn their patient data into information that effectively drives behavior.
It will take time for the data problem to go away as technology advances enough to transform clinical data into easily accessible information, but Nicholson emphasized that organizations have a key role in making current technology a helpful solution rather than an obstacle to success. According to Nicholson, “It is absolutely vital for healthcare professionals to thoroughly understand their data: what data is being entered, who is entering the data, how it is being entered, what processes are working, and what needs changing. You simply cannot control the future success of your organization if you do not really know your data. Ultimately, it´s the data that tells the true story.”
Looking ahead to the future, Nicholson predicts the development of an electronic, connected world that will open the door to a more data-driven environment. Healthy information technology ecosystems will allow for providers to capture social determinants about patients and identify factors that affect the way patients manage their own health. “Providers are gaining access to data in an electronic way that they never had before,” said Nicholson. “If they can access data at the foundation level before patients become sick, not when the problem isn´t fixable, they can collect data about health problems and address them early on.” This framework allows for providers to be successful in a proactive care model rather than the reactive care model that still exists today.
As we are catapulted into a new technology era in healthcare, these electronic systems are introducing new challenges for everyone. Ultimately, the future is population health intelligence and analytics, where data is borderless and shared across the spectrum of technology and the continuum of patient care. However, it´s clear that technology alone is not enough to ensure success. According to Nicholson, what are needed are solutions that marry technology with process and integrate systems with workflows.
Nicholson and the i2i Systems team hold the annual User and Thought Leadership Conference to provide a venue for customers to ask questions of peers and experts, receive actionable solutions, learn in real-time through hands-on labs, and preview product updates. This year was especially beneficial, as attendees received new i2iToolkit Solutions, comprised of professional service options, downloadable reports, screenshots, and guidelines to help them meet NCQA-PCMH Standards and design a successful data validation strategy.
