Waco, Texas (PRWEB) June 19, 2013

When the town of West, Texas was largely destroyed in a recent fertilizer plant explosion, many Texans wanted to help. Shemane Nugent, (yes, married to Ted), has been teaching group fitness classes for thirty years, developed programs for Curves® International and Zumba® Fitness, and has traveled the world promoting healthy living through fitness. So naturally, the first thing Shemane thought to do was to hold a community wide Zumba fitness class to raise money for her West neighbors. A former Baylor University Zumba instructor, Shemane contacted Baylor Assistant Director of Campus Recreation in Fitness, Van Davis, to see if a small gym was available for the fundraiser. Van called back and said, “Good news! We got the Ferrell Center!”

What started out as a simple fitness class to raise money for the West community, has now turned into a spectacular statewide event with Zumba instructors coming from Victoria, San Antonio, Dallas, Waco and West to lend their talents and teaching styles to this amazing event. Former West residents turned Zumba instructors Tammy O’Brien Elliott and Cori Slayder immediately volunteered to help in any way. Then, says Shemane, “My email box was full with messages from amazingly talented instructors who offered support.” Zumba Jammers Carlos Garcia and Stephanie Hamilton came on board immediately, as did amazing instructors Nohemi Parra, Heather Rounds, Corina Gutierrez, and Waco instructors, Lilia Roney, Jeremiah Navejas, Lala Garcia, Emily Field, Catherine Bower, and Angela Beeler.

“Americans are the most generous people in the world and the Zumba fundraiser for West,TX is another example of how caring families give and give to truly needy families,” Ted says. He is currently manipulating his schedule to try attend the event.

The Nugent’s goal is to raise $10,000 that will go directly into an account for the West community. To make a donation or register for the Zumbathon, go to http://www.crowdrise.com/zumbathon4west/fundraiser/liliaroney
