New Cancer Study Reveals the Need for Full-Spectrum Fish Oil, Says Omega3 Innovations Co-Founder

A University of California, Davis research team recently found what they believed to be the connection between fish oil and cancer prevention: metabolites of omega-3 molecules that are components of full-spectrum fish oil.

This finding is a wake-up call to both consumers and manufactures of omega-3 fish oil supplements, suggests Omega3 Innovations’ co-founder, Anne-Marie Chalmers, MD, who has been working with omega-3 fish oil for the past 16 years.

"According to the UC Davis team, the omega-3 metabolites can help prevent tumor growth and metastasis," says Chalmers. "These metabolites, however, are increasingly being removed from omega-3 products as companies seek to produce pharmaceutical or prescription fish oils that only contain one or two types of omega-3 molecules."

Chalmers says that in an effort to increase the omega-3 fatty acids like eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) found in the fish oil, many manufacturers single out only the EPA and DHA molecules, often stripping the oil of the other omega-3 components, their metabolites and supportive nutrients.

"Consumers need to be aware of the full-spectrum fish oil alternative," says Chalmers, "Especially as prescription, or concentrated, omega-3 products are on the rise." Chalmers cited market growth projections for prescription omega-3 at eight percent a year through 2020.
