Computer-assisted screening provides the latest advancement for cervical cancer detection.

Berkeley Heights, NJ (PRWEB) July 11, 2013

Summit Medical Group today announced it has begun using state-of-the-art technology designed to improve diagnosis of cervical cancer and its precursors.

Summit Medical Group now employs the BD FocalPoint™ GS Imaging System developed by BD Diagnostics – Women’s Health and Cancer (Franklin Lakes, NJ). Approved by the FDA for screening BD SurePath™ Pap test slides, it provides further improvements in cervical disease detection. Clinical trials for the BD FocalPoint™ GS Imaging system demonstrated a statistically significant increase in disease detection in the most important precancerous disease categories and a 24.5% improvement in cancer detection in comparison to current manual methods.

Utilizing sophisticated interpretation software and over 100 object analysis algorithms, the BD FocalPoint™ GS Imaging system provides information regarding changes in cell morphology as well as specimen adequacy. The instrument then directs cytotechnologist and pathologist to areas or fields of view on each patient’s (microscope) slide likely to contain abnormality.

Over 11,000 cases of cervical cancer are still diagnosed annually in the U.S. and nearly one out of four women diagnosed will die from their disease. In order to ensure the most accurate diagnosis is made, specimen sampling, preparation, and imaging are all critical components for the detection of this disease. The BD SurePath™ Liquid-based Pap Test combined with the BD FocalPoint™ GS Imaging System provides the Summit Medical Group laboratory with a comprehensive solution for the best patient outcomes.
