Special Learning, Inc. Announces New Social Story App for iPad
New Mobile App Provides Teaching on Social Rules and Norms for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Other Developmental Disabilties
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) July 18, 2013
Special Learning Inc., the leading global provider in special technology applications and educational resources used in teaching children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), announced today the launch of its brand new app for iPad, Saying Goodbye Social Story. This innovative new app provides an easy, accessible way of teaching various common rules and social norms to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities, thus allowing them to function more effectively in everyday social settings.
Social stories are short, illustrated books designed to help children cope in common social settings. The goal of Social Stories is to provide a written and visual representation of how to handle everyday social events that a child might face, which may otherwise cause stress, anxiety or discomfort. By offering repetitive examples through easy-to-read text and fun illustrations, social stories help prepare children to address common situations and teach them how to respond appropriately.
“Special Learning understands the need for technology-based educational solutions that empower the community to make a difference in the lives of individuals with special needs,” said Karen Chung, Founder and Chief Executive Officer. “The Social Stories app for iPad is an interactive and engaging format that enables children to improve their social skills and integrate more successfully with peers.”
Vivid and colorful illustrations paired with clear written storylines told from the student’s perspective make Special Learning’s social story app a fun and enjoyable way to achieve social readiness. Users are able to easily navigate the flip-book app with a touch of the screen. The app is equipped with customizable voice options that allow the user to choose a voice for narration from four possibilities: boy, girl, man or woman. Using an app format that works on commonly used devices allows for the child to blend into their social settings while having easy access to the teaching resource.
In addition to Saying Goodbye, Special Learning will be releasing other titles of the social story app in late fall. The app is available on iTunes and the App Store for $4.99, and will soon be available for Android platform users as well. Using the app in conjunction with the downloadable Social Stories series, which includes the full story, coloring book and rule cards, makes it a perfect learning kit.
