CURE is owned and operated by New Rochelle residents Karen Nussbaumer and Lisa Kempa. Nussbaumer, President and Founder of CURE, was formerly the Technical Manager of Ultrasound at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Nussbaumer also founded the Gulfcoast Institute of Vascular Ultrasound located in Mobile, Alabama. The institute was the first specialized ultrasound school in the country and continues to operate today under new ownership.

Lisa Kempa, CAO/CFO for CURE, served as the former CFO of Nike subsidiaries, Cole Haan and Converse. She became a part of CURE in 2009 but joined full-time in early 2013. According to Nussbaumer, “Lisa Kempa’s leadership experience is exceptional and a very welcome addition to CURE. Her financial and strategic background along with her extraordinary compassion and altruistic nature perfectly complement the long term vision of CURE.” When it comes to ultrasound education, Kempa recommends, “Just do it!”

Since its foundation, the CURE team has worked diligently to provide students with a superior education in ultrasound. With a 94 percent graduate employment rate for its 2012-2013 reporting period, CURE strives to provide each graduate with the tools they need to have a rewarding and lucrative career in the field of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. “CURE’s greatest achievement is our student’s success,” said Nussbaumer.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a strong career choice for those who desire to help others by becoming a part of the medical workforce. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, growth of the DMS field is expanding at a rate that is much faster than the average for other occupations. Employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is expected to increase by 44 percent by the year 2020. The same source also cites the median income for sonographers as being $30.95 per hour or $64,380 per year.

CURE offers 12, 18 and 24 month sonography courses with specialized programs focusing on general, vascular and cardiac ultrasound. Current regulations allow those who have obtained a high school diploma or GED to apply to ultrasound schools in the state of New York. As of September 1, 2013, however, those regulations may change and a bachelor’s degree or 2-year Allied Health degree may be required.

According to the ABHES website, the organization “enhances the quality of education and training and promotes institutional and programmatic accountability through systematic and consistent program evaluation. Its key is to assure the quality of the programs it accredits, and assist in the improvement of the programs. This quality-determination is accomplished by rigorous and systematic evaluation based on valid standards.” CURE is to be congratulated for having achieved the high level of quality and the degree of excellence required by ABHES in receiving their institutional accreditation.
