With the open enrollment component of the Affordable Care Act beginning October 1st, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) partnered with the Health Resources and Services Administration to launch an online resource center dedicated to informing health care professionals, especially nurses and those in the mental health field, of the upcoming changes. The information will enable caregivers to help consumers find and access appropriate insurance coverage so that they can utilize the health care services they need. Resource center offerings include:

*Information about the upcoming Health Insurance Marketplace and how to enroll.

*Continuing education on the Affordable Care Act for healthcare professionals.

*Print materials and fact sheets for distribution to consumers.

*Research on how the ACA will expand mental health care coverage.

*Information on how nurses will be affected by the Affordable Care Act.

"I applaud the American Psychiatric Nurses Association for creating this new webpage dedicated to Affordable Care Act information and resources: http://www.apna.org/ACA," says Mary Wakefield, PhD, RN, Administrator of the US Health Resources and Services Administration.

APNA President Beth Phoenix, PhD, RN, CNS says, "As a scientific and educational organization committed to improving services for people with mental health concerns, part of APNA’s mission is to ensure that our members are informed of changes in legislation and policy that affect psychiatric mental health nursing and mental health care. APNA is pleased to be able to help disseminate information that will allow more Americans to gain access to the care they need."

The Affordable Care Act resources are available to the public and can be accessed at http://www.apna.org/ACA/. Psychiatric mental health nurses and other providers of health care are encouraged to share the resources with clients, colleagues, and their communities.

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association is a national professional membership organization committed to the specialty practice of psychiatric-mental health nursing and wellness promotion, prevention of mental health problems and the care and treatment of persons with psychiatric disorders. APNA’s membership is inclusive of all psychiatric mental health registered nurses including associate degree, baccalaureate, advanced practice (comprised of clinical nurse specialists and psychiatric nurse practitioners), and nurse scientists and academicians (PhD). APNA serves as a resource for psychiatric mental health nurses to engage in networking, education, and the dissemination of research.
