21st Century Oncology to Advance Cancer Research with University Partnership
Radiation therapy provider partners with Yale School of Medicine's COPPER Center
FORT MYERS, Fla. (PRWEB) September 04, 2013
21st Century Oncology has partnered with Yale School of Medicine’s Cancer Outcomes, Public Policy and Effectiveness Research (COPPER) Center and the Department of Therapeutic Radiology to bolster comparative effectiveness research in the radiation oncology community and to address the critical challenges clinicians, policy makers and cancer patients and their families face today.
Yale’s interdisciplinary COPPER Center, in close collaboration with the Yale Department of Therapeutic Radiology, has a rich history of conducting cancer effectiveness and outcomes research, aiming to improve cancer care and reduce the burden of cancer for individual patients and society. 21st Century Oncology is the largest provider of radiation oncology services in the United States. With their expansive network of radiation therapy treatment centers both domestic and abroad and their dedication to advanced, integrated cancer care, 21st Century Oncology has the unique ability to touch the lives of patients and their families through continuous innovation and improvement.
President, CEO and Co-Founder of 21st Century Oncology, Daniel Dosoretz, M.D., F.A.C.R., F.A.C.R.O. believes the partnership has great potential. “Our focus on our patients is our number one goal,” says Dr. Dosoretz. “This collaboration with Yale School of Medicine will allow us to continue to support rigorous, patient-centered research and be an agent for improvement and an advocate for every person who walks through our doors.”
“We could not be more excited about this new initiative,” said Cary Gross, M.D., Director of the COPPER Center. “We believe that the breadth of clinical experience, diverse practice environments and patient populations and rich data from the 21st Century Oncology centers, paired with the expertise of our Yale team, will enhance the ability to generate new insights about the outcomes of radiation therapy that are most relevant to both clinicians and patients. For example, a more thorough understanding of the quality of life associated with different radiation therapies would drastically improve the patient experience.”
James Yu, M.D., Assistant Professor of Therapeutic Radiology at Yale, agrees, saying “The collaboration between 21st Century Oncology and Yale has the potential to impact care and change practice almost immediately. We will be able to gain insights with a focus on specific radiation therapy outcomes in a manner that will take into account the most up-to-date techniques and patterns of care.”
The Yale-21st Century Oncology Partnership will help establish a model for collaboration between the academic community and large practice networks, one that ensures scientific rigor, fosters independent research and above all, optimizes patient care.
This partnership will enhance the capacity and infrastructure for patient centered outcomes research at both 21st Century Oncology and Yale School of Medicine. The new partnership will add momentum to the radiation oncology community’s ability to generate new knowledge, disseminate models of evidence-based clinical care and deliver safe and effective cancer therapy.
“We look forward to working with Yale School of Medicine as we strive to develop outcomes based radiation therapy treatment protocols for cancer together,” says Timothy Shafman, M.D., Medical Director of 21st Century Oncology’s New England region.
