New York, NY (PRWEB) September 09, 2013

Contrary to the outdated stereotype of writers as hard drinkers who do their best work with a bottle at hand, sobriety has proved a much more successful path to creativity for best-selling author and screenwriter Lawrence Block, New York Times columnist David Carr, actor and writer Malachy McCourt, author Sacha Z. Scoblic, and writer Michael Winship. On Tuesday, October 1 at 7:30pm, journalist and author William Cope Moyers will host a panel discussion among these acclaimed creators entitled “Chasing the Muse…Stone Cold Sober,” to be held at the Quad Cinema in Greenwich Village.

Presented by Writers In Treatment, WGA East and Hazelden Foundation, the panel will provide an honest dialogue among some of the country’s most creative professionals about their personal struggles with drugs and alcohol, how their addictions affected their careers, their journeys to sobriety, and the advice they would offer to anyone facing the same challenges. The event is part of the REEL Recovery Film Festival & Symposium, running September 27–October 3 in New York City.

The panelists for “Chasing the Muse…Stone Cold Sober” are:

  •     Lawrence Block, an award-winning screenwriter and author (My Blueberry Nights, Tilt, Eight Million Ways to Die)
  •     David Carr, media columnist for The New York Times and author of the memoir The Night of the Gun, about his own struggle with cocaine
  •     Malachy McCourt, an actor, writer, radio talk show host and politician
  •     Sacha Z. Scoblic, author of Unwasted: My Lush Society
  •     Michael Winship, WGAE President and senior writer at Moyers & Company.

Host William Cope Moyers is a recovery advocate and the author of Broken and Now What?

“We invite anyone who is struggling with, has been touched by, or wants a deeper insight into addiction to attend this extraordinary event, featuring some of the most talented and versatile creators of our time,” says Leonard Buschel, founder and chairman of the Reel Recovery Film Festival. “These writers prove that yes, it is possible to be a creative person and produce outstanding works of fiction and nonfiction without touching alcohol or drugs.”
