Beautiful people all around Canada are doing it – and they’re doing it the right way.

That’s right, Canadians are getting their tan on, and not just anywhere. They’re doing it at Joint Canadian Tanning Association (JCTA) member salons, where professional standards are strictly enforced and trained and industry certified operators are in control of all equipment. Check out this fun JCTA video for more about how and where Canadians are “doing it” this winter.

“Just like in your personal life, standards are the key to a good experience. JCTA-certified salons are held to strict professional standards, so you know you’re in good hands,” says Steve Gilroy JCTA Executive Director. These standards include the requirement to evaluate each client’s skin type in order to recommend the appropriate tanning schedule, maintaining complete client records, and ensuring that every client uses protective eyewear. But the professional salon difference goes beyond these mandatory standards; industry certified operators in JCTA salons have the expertise to help Canadians keep the perfect tan all year long. They know which equipment clients should use, which lotions and other products will help get fast and long-lasting results and, most importantly, they know how to help a person tan in a non-burning fashion – the golden rule of indoor tanning.

Professional salons believe in teaching moderation and sunburn prevention to minimize the risks associated with UV exposure. Getting a beautiful tan starts with educated skin care technicians evaluating a person’s skin type, setting a moderate exposure schedule, issuing protective eyewear and implementing other safety screening techniques.

Tanning is not a one-size-fits all. Getting a beautiful UV tan means something different for everyone. That’s because the amount of UV exposure needed to acquire a tan is different for a fair-skinned person than it would be for a central European with an olive complexion.

JCTA professional sunbed salons understand that. That’s why tanning professionals are trained to get clients the appropriate amount of UV exposure while minimizing the risk of sunburn. Your smart tanning regimen begins with determining a person’s particular skin type. Additionally, in professional salons:

  • Trained operators’ control all tanning exposure times, minimizing a client’s risk of overexposure and sunburn, and require tanners to use Health Canada-compliant protective eyewear, which eliminates the risk of eye injury.
  • All clients undergo comprehensive evaluations, including identifying their sun sensitivity (skin type). Clients also are taught about photosensitizing medications, which can potentially make a person more susceptible to sunburn.
  • Clients are taught sunburn prevention and the appropriate use of outdoor chemical sunscreens. This education, combined with the fact that a tan is nature’s protection against sunburn, is why indoor tanning clients are up to 81 percent less likely to sunburn outdoors as compared to non-tanners, according to surveys.
  • Clients are presented with material outlining the potential risks of overexposure to UV light and sign informed consent agreements acknowledging this.

The Joint Canadian Tanning Association (JCTA) is a national non-profit organization created to increase understanding of the professional tanning industry's scientifically supported position that regular moderate ultra-violet exposure from sunshine or sunbed in a non-burning fashion is part of a responsible lifestyle that recognizes both the inherent benefits and the manageable risks associated with ultraviolet light exposure.
