Mimicking Calorie Restriction: A Strategy for Improving Healthy Aging and Longevity

October 31, 2013

A new research study has reported on the biological mechanisms of calorie restriction, announced Ethical Alternative Products, a supplier of premium grade products associated with healthy aging.

Wyckoff, NJ (PRWEB) October 31, 2013

A new research study conducted by G. Testa et al.*, and published in the September 2013 issue of Curr Pharm Des, describes a strategy for achieving healthy aging by studying the biological mechanisms associated with calorie restriction (CR), and substituting natural or pharmacological agents that mimic these CR anti-aging mechanisms. Calorie restriction with adequate nutrition is the only non-genetic, and the most consistent non-pharmacological, intervention that extends lifespan in model organisms from yeast to mammals, and protects against biological deterioration and delays or reduces the risk of many age-related diseases.

The biological mechanisms of CR’s beneficial effects include modifications in energy metabolism, oxidative stress, insulin sensitivity, and inflammation. The molecular signaling pathways mediating these effects include sirtuins, peroxisome proliferator, AMP-activated protein kinase, and insulin/insulin growth factor-1.

Since most people cannot or will not comply with a rigorous dietary restriction program, research is increasingly being aimed at determining the feasibility and efficacy of natural or pharmacological molecules that mimic CR effects without lowering food intake. Some likely candidates include resveratrol, polyphenols, alpha lipoic acid.

“Ethical Alternative Products produces a solubilized, high-bioavailability formulation of alpha lipoic acid that is sold under the brand name ThioGel. ThioGel is produced in the U.S. using raw material alpha lipoic acid that is sourced from Italy,” stated Gerald Bruno, Ph.D., CEO of Ethical Alternative Products.
